We’ve all read how Trump is eroding our democracy. But just how bad has it gotten?
According to a number of experts that monitor democracy, there’s definitely cause for concern. Protect Democracy‘s “Authoritarian Playbook for 2025” (written in Jan 2024), features six key threats to democracy in this graphic. These are listed below with some of the actions the Trump administration has taken.
Pardons to License Lawbreaking – There are dozens of pardons Trump has issued to free criminals but the most egregious are the Jan 6 insurrectionists.
Investigations against critics and rivals – James Comey (former FBI Dir), Letitia James (NY AG, prosecuted Trump), Adam Schiff (lead prosecutor in impeachment trials)
Regulatory retaliation – withheld $ Billions in congressionally approved funding to organizations incl: NSF, NIH, Head Start, Clean energy grants, foreign aid plus universities
Federal enforcement overreach – ICE has operated as a shadow police force indiscriminately capturing and deporting thousands of people without due process.
Domestic deployment of military – National Guard ordered or sent to LA, Washington DC, Chicago and Portland against the wishes or approval of Governors and Mayors
Refusal to leave office – Trump has said multiple times he will run for a 3rd term *
- Note – attacks on voting and voting laws are related to this threat. Trump has continually lied about losing the 2020 election and supported convicted Colorado election official, Tina Peters. He’s pushing to outlaw mail-in voting (voting fraud is minuscule in states where it is currently used) and pushing burdensome new voter ID laws that will effectively reduce Democrat voting
